Workshops, cocktail tastings, competitions, and networking opportunities are all part of the Art of the Cocktail, the signature fundraiser for the Victoria Film Festival.  This event opens the door to a world of elegant spirits: great classics, fresh trends, niche bitters, established players, and the artisan regional distillers.

Features:
The World Traveller - Best Bars and Cocktail Lounges: That rambunctous bon vivant of Iron Chef America and The Thirsty Traveller, Kevin Brauch, is back.  Who can forget his antics at the Best Bartender of the Pacific Northwest Competition last year?  He rocks, he rolls, and he knows all about cocktails.  In this session, he'll take you around the world as you discover the best cocktail lounges you won't want to miss.

Swizzle and Shake: Trader Tiki Blair Reynolds (www.tradertiki.com) is renowned for information on tiki drinks and culture, and has been featured in magazines across the US.  Blair will be teaching all about the swizzle and what's in the shake, with a workshop featuring a glimpse at the history of tropical mixology and PolyPop culture.  The workshop features a sipping tour through tiki history, what makes a drink 'Tiki', and an interactive tropical cocktail development hands-on (with a reward for the best drink of the class!).

The Pre-History & Evolution of Gin: Come out for a fling with jet-set bartender, writer, and saloonkeeper Philip Duff, as he charts the ancient, missing, true history of gin: from the Moors settling France as far as Bordeaux until 732 AD, Holland 1269, England's "Gin Craze" in the 1700s, the birth of Mahon gin in the 1700s, the rise and fall of gin, and the mid-1980s rebirth of the gin category.  Includes exhaustive tastings of gin & genever, including a world exclusive: gin made to the world's oldest extant recipe, dating from 1495.

Daniel Leveille and his six-member company have been at the forefront of contemporary dance since the mid-1990s.  This performance is one of a triptych of pieces, danced in the nude, inspired by his interest in street youth.  The performace is for adults only; formal in composition but raw, energetic, and blunt in its movement.
Tickets can be purchased through the Royal Theatre box office, by phone at 250-386-6121, or online at www.rmts.bc.ca

November 11, 13, 16, 18, 20

Love, honour, and devotion shine through Handel's story of political intrigue in medieval Lombardy.  Devastated by her husband's apparent death and fearful for her son, Queen Rodelinda shows remarkable courage and guile as she challenges Grimoaldo, the tyrant who has usurped the throne and is forcing her into marriage.

One of the most touching descriptions of married love in opera, Rodelinda is also a study of the nuances of villainy, as Grimoaldo grapples with an uneasy conscience and his henchman Garibaldo plumbs the depts of Machiavellian treachery.  This is Baroque opera at its best - utterly graceful, sublimely emotional.

November 14

This is a collaboration of original songs by Canadian Juno award winner Sue Foley and critically acclaimed US singer/songwriter Peter Karp.  The project is based around a correspondence the two shared through letters; starting as a personal exchange about life as a musician, these letters eventually became their songs.  Whether they're performing as an acoustic duo or with their electric band, the music encompasses elements of folk, jazz, flamenco, and blues resulting in a show that is moving, literate, romantic, rocking, and exciting.  Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at the door, at Lyle's Place, Ditch Records, or online at www.hightideconcerts.net.  The doors open at 6 pm at Hermann's Jazz Club (753 View Street).
