Cluster Lights
In the fall of 2005, the Downtown Victoria Business Association committed $27,138 to partner with the City to share the cost of fabricating and installing new heritage cluster lights along Belleville Street from Menzies to Pendry. This was the beginning of our "Corridors of Light" initiative - a strategy for creating well-illuminated pedestrian promenades within the boundaries of the Downtown Victoria Business Association.
The DVBA Board believes that the continued improvement of lighting levels on downtown streets is a very important element of making our downtown more welcoming to residents and visitors alike. The use of distinctive, historic cluster light design reinforces the charm of downtown while contributing to a greater sense of security.
From 2005 to 2010, the DVBA has invested a total of almost $280,000 in improving street illumination. We have partnered with the City of Victoria to install new lighting on Belleville, Broughton, Fort, Government, Fisgard, and Wharf streets, and in the Blue Bridge to the east of the Johnson Street Bridge.
This initiative also encompassed the installation - in partnership with the City of Victoria and community associations within Chinatown - of "Heavenly Lights" suspended across Fisgard and Government streets in Chinatown, further enhancing the appeal of Canada's oldest Chinatown.
We have also been working on a strategy for more effectively illuminating our Downtown during the Christmas season. To that end, we have worked with the City to install decorative Christmas trees on certain downtown lamp standards; we have also installed holiday hanging baskets on other streets; decorated trees in strategic downtown locations with LED lighting; and we have fabricated aluminum Christmas trees, bedecking them with LED lights and installed them around the harbour.
In addition, we provide our ILLUMINATE Downtown grants, which support business and property owners who wish to better light their properties for aesthetic or security purposes. At the beginning of 2010, we had provided over $25,000 for this purpose.
