Floating On The Margins: Chinese Life on the Canadian Pacific Passenger Liners

February 28 - August 28

The Maritime Museum of BC celebrates the 155th anniversary of Victoria's Chinatown with an exhibit which celebrates the important contributions that Chinese Canadians made to BC's marine heritage. This exhibit uses items from the Maritime Museum and UBC's Chung Collection to illustrate the lives of early Chinese Canadian sailors and passengers on the Canadian Pacific passenger liners. (The Chung Collection consists of over 25,000 items on early immigration and settlement history in BC).

Race to the End of the Earth

May 17 - October 14

The race is on! In 1911, two Antarctic-bound explorers, the Englishman Robert Falcon Scott and the Norwegian Roald Amundsen, led teams through harrowing conditions against a ticking clock. Who could reach the pole first? And when they got there, could either make it back home? This new exhibition recounts one of the most stirring tales of exploration - the dramatic contest to reach the South Pole.

Nixie Barton: West End Gallery

May 18 - 30

An exhibition of new paintings by Nixie Barton and Grant Leier are chock-a-block with flowers, vases, wine, and fruit. Striving for images that evoke a sense of well-being and goodness, Grant and Nixie play with intense colour and patterning, creating a joyful celebration in everything they paint. Accompanying the paintings are large sculptural pieces by Gabriola Island fused-glass artist Tammy Hudgeon. Tammy's playful approach and technique are perfectly paired with Nixie Barton and Grant Leier's paintings.

Paul Jorgensen: West End Gallery

June 8 - 20

Paul Jorgensen's paintings are bright and playful. Aerial views feature quirky houses clustered together, twisted paths, elongated shapes, elaborate patterning, and hot colours. Inspired by illustration Paul's vision is based half in reality and half in his vivid imagination. The resulting work is both dramatic and pleasingly whimsical.

Core Samples: Visual Arts Faculty 1963-1985 at Legacy Art Gallery

June 19 - September 28

This exhibition presents the history of the University of Victoria's Visual Arts department, from its earliest days as a breakaway department from the Faculty of Education to its strong reputation for innovations in printmaking, painting, photography, and sculpture. 18 artists, including John Dobereiner, Donald Harvey, Pat Martin Bates, Peter Daglish, Roland Brener, Mowry Baden, and Fred Douglas, reflect a range of media and groundbreaking artistic practice.
