Over 80,000 visits to Lights of Wonder in December, 2023

VICTORIA, BC—The Downtown Victoria Business Association (DVBA) is proud to announce that Victoria’s largest free light display, Lights of Wonder, was more successful than ever in drawing people into the downtown core during December 2023. The event had over 80,000 attendees throughout the month.

New Year’s Eve alone drew over 4,000 visitors to Centennial Square to ring in the new year amid the lights for the final night of the event.

The DVBA created Lights of Wonder in 2019. After a pandemic hiatus in 2020, the event has continued every year since, growing in popularity each holiday season. This free, family friendly holiday event was created to encourage those living in the Sooke to Sidney area of Southern Vancouver Island to come downtown during the holidays. It is the downtown business community’s gift to the region every year. In 2023, the lights were on every day of December, drawing tens of thousands more people than previous years into the core to experience the magical light display and patronize the many businesses in the vicinity.

With the holiday season behind us, the DVBA is excited for an eventful couple months ahead downtown. January and February will offer myriads of great events – some recurring, many brand new – to draw more people into the city’s core. Dine Around and Stay in Town, the Winter Arts Festival, the Victoria Film Festival, the Hot Chocolate Festival, and Scotiabank’s Hockey Day in Canada, are just some events that are fast approaching.

DVBA CEO, Jeff Bray, said: “The most recent Lights of Wonder truly added to the magic of the season. We want to thank the over 80,000 people who came downtown, enjoyed the lights, and supported our many wonderful and unique downtown businesses. The region’s continuing focus and support for shopping local lead to a tremendous season for our downtown!”
